THAILAND: Community radio regulation in effect

The prime minister's office minister emphasizes that community radio stations should not have allegiances to political parties

Community radio stations all over the country have now come under a regulation which requires them to abide by the law or face closure, Prime Minister's Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtoey said on Friday.

Mr Sathit said since the regulation has been announced and was now being enforced.

Community radio stations which have registered with the National Telecommunications Commission were required to meet the criteria set down in the regulation.

Those stations which had not registered with the NTC were required to do so by the deadline set in the announcement.

He stressed that community radio stations should not be used for political campaigning against or for any particular group or party.

They must be truly used for public services as clearly stated in the regulation.
