Sondhi Limthongkul, a core leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), will not attend today’s press conference on the investigation into the attempt to kill him, New Politics party secretary-general Suriyasai Katasila said on Friday morning.

Mr Sondhi will follow the explanation by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva via the media at his residence, and afterwards the leaders of the PAD will hold their own press conference, Mr Suriyasai said.

Asked about the police chief Pol Gen Phatcharawat Wongsuwan's move to file a defamation law suit against ASTV Manager, the local daily newspaper owned by Mr Sondhi, Mr Suriyasai said it was not a problem.

The police chief had the right to protect his reputation but all the facts would be revealed in court, he said.

Gunmen ambushed Mr Sondhi in Bangkok as he was being driven to work on the morning of April 17. He received secondary wounds and his driver was critically injured.

The leading police investigator has complained that senior officers within the force are obstructing the investigation.
